The 42nd Ricky Road Run, a 10-mile race for four charities, starts at 9.30am on Sunday 18 October at Chorleywood Working Club. Entry is £28 to £32.
The Ricky Road Run returns on Sunday 18 October, its 42nd running, and registration is open. The 10-mile race starts and finishes at Chorleywood Working Club, Shepherds Lane, Rickmansworth WD3 5HA, about five miles west of Watford town centre, and the postcode sits in the Chorleywood South and Maple Cross ward of Three Rivers.
The race sets off at 9.30am. Sign-up on the day opens at 8.00am at the club.
What it costs and who gets the money
Entry prices, from the organisers’ registration page:
- £28 in advance for a runner affiliated to a UK Athletics club, £30 on the day
- £30 in advance for everyone else, £32 on the day
The race is run on a not-for-profit basis, and the charities page says all proceeds from registration and corporate sponsorship are split 25% each between four charities:
- WaterAid, which the organisers describe as the longest relationship the race has, running since 1984
- KitAid, the Hertfordshire-based charity that sends used sports kit abroad, founded in 1998
- Safer Places, which supports adults and children affected by domestic abuse across Essex and Hertfordshire
- Jubilee House Care Trust, based in Welwyn Garden City, which supports children and adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex mental health needs
Two things to be aware of before you donate. The organisers’ own FAQs page still names a different set of charities, including two that are not on the charities page, so the charities page is the one to trust. And the organisers told us by email that the race has raised over £450,000 in total; that figure is not published on the race’s own website, so we have not been able to check it at source.
The race is organised by staff at Affinity Water, which is also its organising sponsor and whose email address the organisers use. Affinity Water has supported WaterAid for almost 40 years, according to the charities page.
The practical details

- Minimum age: 17 for the 10-mile race
- Route: through Chorleywood, Chalfont and Rickmansworth, fully marshalled, with four water stations
- Parking: there is none at the club. The organisers ask people to use other local parking and to be mindful of residents
- Not allowed: dogs, except registered medical assistance dogs with the race director’s prior approval, and buggies or pushchairs
- Refunds: entries are non-refundable and cannot be deferred, but they can be transferred
- Results: timings are published by Racesonline
No race packs are posted out. You collect your number at the start.
What it means for you
If you want to run it, you can enter now through the organisers’ registration page on RaceResult, or turn up from 8am on the day and pay £2 more. If you would rather give than run, the charities page has a donation link that splits the money four ways.
If you live along the route, expect a road race passing through Chorleywood, Chalfont and Rickmansworth on the Sunday morning. The organisers publish a route map marking the sections closed to traffic. No temporary road closure order for the race had been advertised on the Public Notice Portal when we checked on 23 September, so treat the map, not a statutory notice, as the guide to which roads are affected.
