Watford's Christmas lights come on about 5pm on Saturday 21 November at Pondside, 4pm to 6pm. What is confirmed, and how it differs from last year's Winterfest.

Watford’s Christmas lights are switched on at about 5pm on Saturday 21 November 2026, at Pondside at the top of the town centre. The event runs from 4pm to 6pm and it is free.

Two organisers list it, and they do not say quite the same thing. Watford Town Centre’s own event page gives 4pm to 6pm at Pondside, with live entertainment on stage and the tree switched on at 5pm. The council’s events site, Watford Actually, lists the same date and a 4pm start under the organiser Watford Town Centre BID, and adds two things the BID page does not mention: a “traditional High Street parade” and “a special appearance from Santa”.

Until the BID publishes a running order, treat the parade and Santa as likely rather than confirmed. The BID page itself ends with “More details to come”.

The BID says the town centre will get “magical new lights for 2026”, so the display itself is being changed rather than reused.

It is not being called Winterfest this year, and it is shorter

Last year the switch-on sat inside a much bigger event, and the difference is worth knowing before you plan the afternoon.

Watford Town Centre BID ran Winterfest on Saturday 15 November 2025 from 2pm to 6pm, a four-hour free event on The Parade. Its own announcement, published 9 October 2025, listed free funfair rides including a rodeo reindeer, a giant snow globe, a Christmas carousel, a pudding shy and penguin skittles, a Christmas-themed Watford market, live stage entertainment by the pond, and a parade from 4pm outside McDonald’s on the lower high street up to the pond, with a marching band, costume characters, community groups and Santa on a sleigh. The lights went on at roughly 4.30pm, after the parade.

The 2026 listing is different on three counts. It is titled “Christmas Lights Switch-On” rather than Winterfest, it runs two hours rather than four, and the lights go on at 5pm rather than 4.30pm. Nothing published so far mentions a funfair, a market or a drone show.

That does not mean they are gone. The BID page says “More details to come”, and the council’s own listing still promises a High Street parade and Santa. But if you are picturing last year’s four-hour afternoon, wait for the running order before you build a day around it.

No standalone Christmas market has been announced

Watford Town Centre’s events listing, read on 5 September 2026, carries no Christmas market for 2026. In 2025 the Christmas-themed market was part of Winterfest rather than a separate event, so its return depends on what the BID puts in the 21 November programme.

What is listed for the autumn is a Halloween run: a Trick or Treat Trail from 26 to 30 October, Market Lates Halloween on 30 October and a Trick or Treat Show on 31 October. Market Lates is the town’s evening market format and has run spring, summer and Halloween editions this year, so a festive edition would be the obvious addition. None is published yet.

Who pays for the lights

The BID funded the town’s LED Christmas installations in 2025 for the seventh year running, with a contribution from Watford Borough Council. The Harlequin shopping centre puts up its own displays separately.

Getting there and parking

Pondside is the public event space by the pond at the top of The Parade, which is how the council’s own events site describes it. The switch-on lands in the middle of a Saturday shopping afternoon, so the town centre car parks will already be filling before it starts.

No road closure has been published for 21 November. If the parade runs on the 2025 route, up the high street from McDonald’s to the pond, a temporary closure would be needed, and orders of that kind normally appear a couple of weeks beforehand. We will add it here when it does.
