Watford bin collection days and what each bin costs

Watford Borough Council collects the bins, and Veolia does the work under contract. Your collection day depends on your address, so the only reliable answer comes from the council’s own lookup at watford.gov.uk/checkmybinday, which redirects to the My Watford portal and gives your address its own calendar.

What that lookup does not tell you is what everything costs, what happens over Christmas, or what to do when a bin is left behind. That is what this page is for. Every figure below was taken from the council’s own pages on 2 September 2026.

The four bins

One warning about that page. It describes the blue-lidded bin as “collected every week two weeks”, which is not a frequency anyone can act on. Recycling for houses moved from weekly to fortnightly on 21 October 2024. If you are unsure which week you are in, use the bin day lookup rather than that sentence.

Food waste is now collected from every home in the borough. The council and Veolia added 10,500 flats to the service between September and December 2025, which completed the rollout to all 46,000 Watford households in time for the March 2026 legal deadline. If your collection day changed at some point last winter, that is why.

Put it out by 6am

The council’s rules are short and they are enforced:

• Bins go on the boundary of your property by 6am on your collection day.
• Bring them back inside your boundary within 24 hours of being emptied.
• Only wheelie bins issued by Watford Borough Council are emptied.
• If the lid will not shut, that is excess waste and the bin will be left.
• Anything left on the ground beside a black, brown or green-lidded bin is excess waste and will not be collected.
• A green garden bin is only emptied if it carries the current year’s sticker.

Bank holidays and Christmas

This is the change that catches people out, and Watford handles the two cases differently.

Ordinary bank holidays: everything moves one day later for the whole week. Nothing is collected on the bank holiday Monday, and a Friday round lands on the Saturday.

That shift is running right now. Nothing was collected on Monday 31 August, every round this week is a day late, and a usual Friday collection lands on Saturday 5 September. Normal days resume from Monday 7 September. The council set the timetable out in its notice of 23 August. After this week the next bank holiday is Christmas.

Christmas does not follow that rule. Some collections move earlier, not later. The council has not yet published its arrangements for December 2026. Here is what it did last year, in a notice issued on 22 December 2025, as a guide to the shape of it:

Two things carried through that whole run. Garden waste was suspended from 24 December to 9 January, and everyone was allowed two extra bags of general rubbish and one extra bag of recycling on their first collection after Christmas. The disruption lasted three weeks, not one.

Do not plan around the 2025 dates. Watch the council’s news feed in the second half of December, and check whether your Monday round has been pulled forward to the Saturday before.

Garden waste: £62.40, and the year runs to August

Green bin collections are a paid subscription. The prices for the current year:

• £62.40 a year for the first bin
• £80 a year for each additional bin, up to seven in total
• £40 a year per bin if you receive a qualifying benefit
• £62.40 a year per bin for qualifying organisations

The benefit rate applies if you get Universal Credit, Guaranteed Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-based Employment and Support Allowance, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit, or Council Tax Reduction.

The detail worth knowing is the subscription year, which runs to 31 August, not to 31 March. A sign-up made now runs to 31 August 2027. Direct debits renew automatically and are taken on 1 July, with stickers posted in August. Card payers have to renew themselves each year by the end of August or collections stop. There is no discount for joining part way through the year and no refund for stopping.

When the black bin is not big enough

The council’s answer is not a bigger black bin. It is three other things, and one of them is free.

Recycling is unlimited. The council’s own wording is that “you can put out as much recycling as you like”, provided the extra is in clearly labelled or clear plastic bags next to the blue-lidded bin. That is the cheapest way to shrink a black bin problem, and almost nobody knows it.

A second recycling bin is free to households with four or more permanent residents. You ask Veolia for a second 240-litre blue-lidded bin. There is a £7.75 delivery charge for a new or replacement bin, taken over the phone.

Purple excess waste sacks cost £3.50 each, bought over the phone from Veolia, plus £1.80 postage. Crews take extra rubbish only if it is inside one of these branded purple sacks. Ordinary black sacks left beside a bin are not collected. Council-branded nappy sacks are 70p each, and should be filled halfway and tied.

If you live in a block of six or more flats, none of this applies to you. Only waste inside the communal bins is taken, and extra or bulky items are the managing agent’s or landlord’s problem, not the council’s.

Bulky items

Three items is the cap per collection. Households receiving certain council-related benefits get 50% off. Booking is not online: you email enquiries.watford@veolia.co.uk with the items, quantity, name, address and phone number, or phone 020 3567 6900, and Veolia calls back to arrange a slot and take payment. A missed collection: you have 24 hours

Report it online after 5pm and within 24 hours of your collection day. Miss that window and the bin waits for the next scheduled round. Veolia also takes queries direct on 020 3567 6900 or enquiries.watford@veolia.co.uk.

If age, disability or a temporary injury makes it hard to move the bins, the council runs an assisted collection service and the crew fetches them from your property.

The tip: two sites, and one is open every day

Both recycling centres are run by Hertfordshire County Council, not the borough.

Waterdale is the one to use midweek: it is Watford’s own site and it does not close on any day of the week. Both are open on every bank holiday except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

You need a free ePass, and it now applies to cars. The individual site pages still carry an older line saying an ePass is only needed for a van, trailer or an out-of-county visit. That is wrong. The county’s own ePass page is blunt: “Hertfordshire residents now need an ePass to visit recycling centres in Hertfordshire.” It is free, there is nothing to display and no booking, and ANPR cameras read your plate at the gate. A household can register up to three, either three cars or two cars and one van or trailer. Turn up without one and staff can sign you up on the spot, but only if you have proof of address with you. Hire vehicle passes last seven days.

Take a driving licence, council tax bill, Hertfordshire bus pass or utility bill either way. DIY waste is accepted in limited quantities only.

Where the council’s own pages disagree with themselves

Worth knowing before you rely on any single page:

• The August bank holiday notice opens with the line “this Bank Holiday Monday (26 August 2024)”. The date is two years out. The table underneath it was correct for 2026.
• The which-bin page’s “collected every week two weeks” line for recycling, above.
• The council links to Waterdale and Rickmansworth without saying that Rickmansworth is shut on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
