Watford has three separate railways into London and they are not the same journey. Watford Junction puts you into London Euston in 16 minutes on the quickest weekday train. Watford Underground, at the far end of Cassiobury Park, takes 38 minutes to Baker Street on the Metropolitan line. Watford High Street sits on the Lioness line and takes 49 minutes to Euston, but it is the cheapest of the three on contactless.
Which one is right depends on where in London you are going and how much of the journey you want to pay National Rail prices for. Times and fares on this page were checked on 10 August 2026 against the published weekday timetable.

The 16-minute run is the 18:36 from Watford Junction, arriving Euston 18:52. In the morning peak the 07:01 does it in 21 minutes and the 08:02 in 20. Every one of those is London Northwestern Railway, running through from Birmingham, Milton Keynes or Tring; the timetable calls them LNR and West Midlands Trains. The 51-minute trains are the Lioness line, the Overground service that stops everywhere down to Euston through Bushey, Carpenders Park, Harrow and Wembley.

Contactless works at all three stations, so most people never buy a paper ticket at all. The number worth knowing is the £2.40 gap between the two main line stations: pay-as-you-go from Watford High Street is £8.70 anytime against £11.10 from Watford Junction, because the High Street station sits inside the TfL zonal system at Zone 8 and Watford Junction does not.
You do not have to give up the fast train to get that fare. Start at Watford High Street, ride one stop to Watford Junction and change onto the LNR fast train, and the 09:03 gets you to Euston at 09:31. That is 28 minutes for £8.70, against 21 minutes for £11.10 from Watford Junction itself. Whether that is worth an eight-minute walk from the top of the High Street is a personal calculation; over a five-day week it is £24.

Read that table carefully before you buy. The London Terminals season at £4,072 is the one nearly everyone wants: it covers the fast trains into Euston. The Victoria and Waterloo seasons cost £360 and £608 more and are priced via Kensington Olympia, meaning the slow Southern route round the west of London, not a faster way in. If what you actually want is a season plus the Tube at the other end, the Zones 1 to 6 travelcard version is £4,432, a premium of £360 a year over the Terminals ticket.
The Metropolitan line, and why it is not the fast option
Watford Underground station is on Cassiobury Park Avenue, about a mile and a half from the town centre, and it is the end of a Metropolitan line branch. It sits in Zone 7, which is why the fare is lower than the main line: the TfL journey planner prices a 9am departure at £7.10 and puts the journey to Baker Street at 38 minutes direct.
That is worth having if your destination is on the Metropolitan line itself, or you work near Baker Street, Euston Square, King’s Cross or Liverpool Street. It is not a substitute for Watford Junction. The fast Euston train does the trip in less than half the time.
The disused railway between Croxley and Watford, which would have carried the abandoned Metropolitan line extension into the town centre, is still protected. What happens to it is being looked at by Hertfordshire County Council as the Watford to Croxley Link, with Atkins running a feasibility study into what could use the corridor. There is no committed scheme and no date.
The other two lines out of Watford Junction
Southern to East Croydon. One train an hour runs south round the west of London through Kensington Olympia, Clapham Junction and East Croydon. The 09:52 reaches Clapham Junction at 10:35 and East Croydon at 11:01, and traintimes puts Gatwick Airport within reach by 11:08. It is genuinely useful if you are heading south and want to avoid crossing central London with luggage.
The Abbey Line to St Albans. A single-track branch, one train an hour at 45 minutes past, Watford Junction to St Albans Abbey in 17 minutes, run by London Northwestern Railway. It is the only direct public transport between the two towns and it stops at Bricket Wood, How Wood, Park Street and Garston on the way.
Avanti West Coast is listed by Transport for London among the operators calling at Watford Junction, but no Avanti service appeared in the London direction on the weekday timetable checked for this page. Plan around London Northwestern.
Getting to the Harry Potter studio tour
The single most common reason visitors arrive at Watford Junction is Warner Bros. Studio Tour London at Leavesden. The shuttle bus leaves from the station, takes about 15 minutes, runs at least every 30 minutes from 9.20am, and is included in the price of your tour ticket. You show the driver your booking confirmation. There is free parking at the studios if you drive instead.

A weekday commuter paying the £11.50 daily rate five days a week would spend more on parking over a year than on the season ticket itself. The 12-month parking season at £1,290 is the sane version of that, and the drop-off is free for 20 minutes. Blue Badge holders park free in the marked bays.
