Things to do in Watford: 17 free parks, £58.50 tour

Watford holds 17 Green Flag Awards, more than any other council in Hertfordshire for the eleventh year running, which tells you where the town’s real strength is. It also has the biggest paid attraction in the county on its doorstep, a working theatre, a concert hall that reopened last year, and a museum that is shut until 2027.

Everything here was checked against the venue’s own website or the council’s own announcements on 10 August 2026. Prices and dates move, so follow the links before you set out.

Free, and on right now

Big Beach returns to the town centre next to Watford Central Library from Friday 14 August to Sunday 30 August, daily from 10am to 4pm, free. There is real sand, deckchairs, and buckets and spades to borrow from the beach hut.

Big Screen is free outdoor cinema with no booking: Pondside from 3 to 9 August and Woodside Playing Fields from 10 to 16 August, with screenings at 1pm, 4pm and 7pm most days and the event area open noon to 10pm. Bring a chair or a blanket. Woodside has traders and funfair rides; Pondside has the town centre cafes.

Cassiobury Park paddling pools are free all summer, reopened for the season on 1 May 2026 with new recirculation tanks. Three splash pads, water jets and two splash pools children control themselves, in sessions of 75 to 90 minutes with 135 bookable and 135 walk-in places each. Book through the Everyone Active app. The pools took more than 50,000 visits last season. The council closes them if the temperature drops to 15°C or below, which in an English August is not a hypothetical.

Herts Pride is at Cassiobury Park on 22 August, and the Museum on Tour pop-up will be there, as it will be at the Watford Community Family Fun Day at King George V Playing Fields on 15 August.

Cassiobury Park

190 acres on the west side of town, running down to the River Gade and the Grand Union Canal, with Green Heritage Site accreditation as well as its Green Flag. Besides the paddling pools there is a bandstand, a miniature railway, mountain bike trails, nature walks and cafe kiosks. Whippendell Wood at the far end is ancient woodland, and the Green Loop cycle route runs through on its way round the town.

The park hosts most of the summer programme: Colourscape from 22 to 31 August, daily 11am to 4.10pm, £6 for adults and £4 for under-18s at the door or in advance, a walk-through structure of coloured chambers with live musicians inside. The Saturday 22nd is a quieter preview day without performances, which the organisers suggest for anyone who would find the full version too much.

Cheslyn House and Gardens

Three and a half acres of gardens and woodland on Nascot Wood Road, free to enter, open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Hours run 9am to 8pm from May to August, 9am to 7pm in April and September, 9am to 6pm in March and October and 9am to 4pm from November to February.

The gardens were laid out by the architect Henry Colbeck and his wife Daisy and are planted with things they brought back from their travels; there are ponds, aviaries and an art exhibition programme in the house. It has its own small car park, buses R8 and 318 stop at Ridge Lane, and it is about a mile and a quarter from Watford Junction. Cheslyn shares the Green Heritage accreditation with Cassiobury.

Callowland Recreation Ground, Cassiobury Park, Cheslyn House and Gardens, Garston Park, Goodwood Recreation Ground, Harwoods Recreation Ground, King George V Playing Fields, Lea Farm Rec, North Watford Cemetery, Orchard Park, Oxhey Activity Park, Oxhey Grange and Watford Heath, Oxhey Park, Paddock Road Allotments, St Mary’s Churchyard, Waterfields Recreation Ground and Woodside Playing Fields.

That is 17 out of 2,391 awarded across the UK in 2026, in a borough this size. Oxhey Activity Park and Woodside are the two to know if you have children and want something other than Cassiobury.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London

The Making of Harry Potter is at Leavesden, postally Watford, and it is the reason most visitors arrive at Watford Junction. Tickets start at £58.50 for an adult and must be booked in advance; there are no walk-ups. The shuttle bus from Watford Junction is included in the ticket, takes about 15 minutes and runs at least every half hour from 9.20am, with extra services from 8.15am when the first tour is at 9am. Show the driver your booking confirmation. If you drive, parking on site is free, with a £10 priority option you book ahead.

Theatre, music and the closed museum

Watford Palace Theatre on Clarendon Road is open and programming across drama, comedy, music and family shows, with tickets from around £10. The autumn includes The Picture of Dorian Gray from 1 to 3 October, An Evening with John Lydon on 20 October and The Gruffalo on 7 and 8 November.

Watford Colosseum reopened in August 2025 after its refurbishment and is run by AEG Presents on behalf of the council. More than 20,000 people came through the opening run, and it now programmes touring music and comedy.

The Museum of Watford is closed. The old building on the Lower High Street shut in October 2023 and the collection is moving to Watford Town Hall, where the museum will reopen in 2027; Marcon Fit-Out was appointed in July 2026 to build the new galleries. In the meantime the museum runs Museum on Tour, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, taking pop-up stalls to summer events across the town. Do not turn up at the Lower High Street expecting a museum.

Sport and swimming

Watford Leisure Centre Central finished a £3m refurbishment in February 2026, and Watford Leisure Centre Woodside had a £600,000 gym refit in spring 2026. Both are run by Everyone Active for the council, and the council runs free gym and swim sessions for under-19s during school holidays.

Watford FC play at Vicarage Road, on the south side of the town centre next to the Riverwell development and Watford General Hospital.

Just outside the borough

Bhaktivedanta Manor at Aldenham, five minutes off the WD25 edge of Watford but formally in Hertsmere, is a Hare Krishna temple set in 78 acres with a protected herd of cows, a rose garden, the George Harrison Garden, an organic farm, woodland walks, a playground and a vegetarian cafe. It is open 10am to 1pm and 4pm to 7.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 7.30pm on Sunday.
