Watford Bin Collections Move a Day From 31 August

Nothing is collected in Watford on Monday 31 August, and every round that week slides one day later. Friday’s collection lands on Saturday 5 September. Normal service resumes on Monday 7 September.

That is the timetable Watford Borough Council published on 23 August. The summer bank holiday this year is Monday 31 August, confirmed on the government’s bank holiday list for England and Wales.

The shift applies to every bin, not just rubbish. A Watford house has a brown food bin, a blue-lidded recycling bin, a black bin for non-recyclable waste, and a green garden waste bin if it pays for that service. Flats in blocks of six or more run on a different set, with a black-lidded bin in place of the black one. All of them move.

Check the date on the council’s own notice

One thing to know before you read it. The council’s notice opens with the line “There will be a revised waste and recycling collection timetable this Bank Holiday Monday (26 August 2024)”. That date is two years out. The rest of the page, including the table of revised days, is correct for 2026, and the page itself is stamped 23 August 2026.

The council’s guide to which bin to use has a second snag. It describes the blue-lidded recycling bin as “collected every week two weeks”, which is not a frequency anyone can act on. Put it out by 6am, and expect the crew to look inside

The usual rules matter more than usual on a shifted week, because a bin put out on the wrong day sits there for an extra 24 hours.

• Bins go on your front boundary the night before, or by 6am on the collection day.
• They come back inside your boundary within 24 hours of being emptied.
• A missed bin should be reported after 5pm, and within 24 hours of your collection day.

The council used the same notice to warn about contaminated recycling. Crews carry out visual checks and may refuse a blue-lidded bin that has the wrong things in it. The council’s line is blunt: one incorrect item can make a whole truckload unsuitable for processing. It asks residents to rinse food and drink containers, squash bottles and cans, and put recycling in loose rather than bagged. Its recycling A to Z settles the arguments about individual items.

The tip is open, and one deadline lands on the bank holiday itself

Waterdale recycling centre in Garston, WD25 0PR, opens 10am to 5.30pm every day of the week. Hertfordshire County Council’s page for the site, updated on 25 August, says its recycling centres are “open on all bank holidays except Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day”. A van or a trailer, or a vehicle from outside Hertfordshire, needs an ePass first.

Separately, 31 August is the renewal deadline for the garden waste service if you pay by card. The council says a card payer who does not renew by that date faces a break in collections. Direct debit customers renew automatically, and their payment was taken on 1 July. The service costs £62.40 a year for a first bin and £80 for each extra one, or £40 a bin for households receiving a qualifying benefit such as Universal Credit, Guaranteed Pension Credit or Council Tax Reduction.

What it means for you

• Do not put a bin out on Monday 31 August. Nothing is collected that day.
• Work out your new day from the table above, then put the bin out by 6am on it.
• If you have a Friday collection, you are on Saturday 5 September this once.
• If you pay for garden waste by card, renew by 31 August or your collections stop.
• Everything returns to the usual day from Monday 7 September.
