No trains from Watford Junction on Christmas Day, and Birmingham New Street shuts 24 to 28 December. What is known so far for Watford's festive travel.

There will be no National Rail trains on Christmas Day, and most operators will run nothing on Saturday 26 December. For Watford the bigger unknown is the West Coast Main Line: Network Rail has not yet said what engineering work it will do between Euston and Watford Junction this Christmas.

The quick answer

  • Friday 25 December: no National Rail trains. Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December, when most operators run no service; the bank holiday itself moves to Monday 28 December.
  • Birmingham New Street closes for engineering from 24 to 28 December, so Watford Junction’s trains to Birmingham will be badly disrupted.
  • Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve trains finish early. National Rail publishes its last-trains guide in late November or early December.

What National Rail has confirmed

National Rail’s Christmas and New Year travel advice covers Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027. As of 25 September it says:

  • Thursday 24 December: trains on many routes finish early. Do not assume the normal timetable.
  • Friday 25 December: no National Rail services at all.
  • Saturday 26 December: most operators run no service; a very limited service will be run by a small number of operators, details to be confirmed.
  • Monday 28 December: the substitute Boxing Day bank holiday. Services still to be confirmed.
  • Thursday 31 December: trains on some routes finish early.
  • Friday 1 January: some London routes run special services after midnight. The guide follows in early December.

Birmingham New Street is the only major work it names so far: “journeys to, from or through Birmingham New Street will be significantly disrupted” from 24 to 28 December inclusive. That hits the direct trains between Watford Junction and Birmingham New Street.

Train operators start adding their own Christmas details “from the beginning of October”, including London Northwestern Railway.

The West Coast Main Line: what happened the last two years

Network Rail usually announces its West Coast Christmas work in the autumn. It did so on 26 September 2024 and on 7 October 2025. Nothing for 2026 had been published on 25 September.

Those two years give a sense of what to expect:

  • 2024/25: track upgrades between Watford and Milton Keynes affected some services from 1 to 4 January. Network Rail also warned that Euston would be “extremely busy” because other London terminals were affected, and advised travelling before 24 December or after 2 January.
  • 2025/26: a £26m rebuild of Hanslope Junction, north of Milton Keynes, affected journeys to and from Euston from the afternoon of 24 December until the morning of 5 January. Sections of the line were closed across 22 days from 24 December to 15 January.

Neither release named a closure between Euston and Watford Junction itself, beyond the whole-network shutdown on Christmas Day. That is a pattern, not a promise.

London Overground and the Metropolitan line

The Lioness line (Watford Junction to Euston via Watford High Street) and the Metropolitan line (Watford station, near Cassiobury Park) are run by TfL. TfL’s status feed showed no planned closures on either line between 19 December 2026 and 5 January 2027 when we checked it on 25 September, but TfL usually adds its festive changes nearer the time.

Last year TfL’s Christmas announcement came on 2 December 2025. It said:

  • services ran on Christmas Eve but finished early
  • there was no service on most public transport on Christmas Day
  • on Boxing Day the Underground and London Buses ran a Sunday service
  • apart from planned closures, services ran all night on New Year’s Eve

That Boxing Day bus service covers TfL routes that reach Watford, such as the 142 from Watford Junction to Brent Cross.

Buses

Hertfordshire operators, including Arriva, had not published anything for Christmas 2026 by 25 September. Intalink, the county’s bus information service, lists timetable changes month by month at intalink.org.uk/service-changes. Expect reduced services on Christmas Eve and little or nothing on Christmas Day.

Parking over Christmas

Watford’s controlled parking zones run as normal on bank holidays, apart from zone V. Christmas Day is one of only two days a year with no restrictions in any zone; Easter Sunday is the other. That is from the council’s bank holiday parking page.

The council has not announced any free Christmas parking in its town centre car parks, and its 2025 festive notices did not include one. Tariffs and the free spots, including two hours at Cassiobury Park, are on our parking in Watford page.

  • London Northwestern Railway’s festive timetable (from October)
  • Christmas Eve last trains from Euston to Watford (late November or early December)
